THE OVERMOLD "The Overmold"
CD/Digital out on March 28th. Listen to an extract of the title track on I,VOIDHANGER RECORDS website.
It was predictable that sooner or later I, Voidhanger Records would have crossed paths with the brilliant guitarist Mick Barr and drummer extraordinaire Tim Wyskida, two Renaissance Men of the metal genre, among the experimental artists who have been able to modernize its vocabulary.
In the first decade of the new century, Mick Barr's post-minimalist guitar playing in projects such as OCRILIM and ORTHRELM managed to bring together apparently irreconcilable musical worlds, for example the avant-garde one of La Monte Young, Terry Riley and Rhys Chatham and that of black metal in its most hypnotic and mesmeric declinations, explored by Barr also in Krallice and BEASTLOR.
Tim Wyskida is most recognized for his work in Khanate and BLIND IDIOT GOD, and has recorded and/or performed with the likes of INSECT ARK, CASPAR BRÖTZMANN, JODIS, KHLYST and GINNUNGAGAP among others. Minimalism, maximalism, wide-ranging tempos & dynamics, accelerandos & ritardandos and improvisation are consistent aspects of his style, thanks to his experience in a wide variety of groups including orchestras, jazz ensembles and rock/metal bands.
Produced by Colin Marston, THE OVERMOLD is the fruit of the prodigious alchemy between these two artists. The duo experiments with doom and drone metal, arriving at an atmospheric synthesis that plays on the contrast between full and empty parts, between sluggish electrical ruminations and sudden rhythmic accelerations, reaching peaks of sophistication and elegance in the 35 minutes of the title track. Following, a handful of shorter but equally visionary songs, almost psychedelic in their rarefied and alienating harmonic development, suspended in time and space.
"The Overmold" is an album of icy beauty, magnetic charm and emotional depth, experimental without being inaccessible, and always generous in creating sinister and menacing atmospheres to which abandon oneself.
TRACKLIST
1. The Overmold (34:45)
2. Song of the Beyonders (4:40)
3. Buildings of Skin (3:55)
4. Withering Other (5:55)
Mick Barr - guitars, bass, vocals
Tim Wyskida - drumset, percussion with Judith Berkson - vocals on "Song of the Beyonders"
Recorded, mixed and mastered by Colin Marston at Menegroth the Thousand Caves. Additional recording at the Oak Relm.

I'm playing an Insect Ark set at Bi Nuu in Berlin, opening for Oranssi Pazuzu on August 5th, 2025. Show announcement via CTM Festival:
August 5th, we’re is bringing two major heavies to Bi Nuu. Oranssi Pazuzu merge the hypnotic rhythms of krautrock with the chaotic intensity of black metal. Their boundary-sneering explorations owe much to the band's emphasis on sound as a multidimensional entity/experience; drawing inspiration from legends like Death Grips, My Bloody Valentine, and Portishead, they weave complex textures and alien timbres into hypnotic latticeworks.
Their latest album »Muuntautuja« is a deeply immersive and alien sonic experience: primal noise juxtaposed with intricate, almost sculptural sound design alive with contradictions— simultaneously mechanical and organical, dreamy and nightmarish—crafted to baffle and bungle perceptions of what metal can achieve. At its fluctuating core, »Muuntautuja« embodies themes of transformation and existential contemplation, peering through a lens darkly at mortality, our utter cosmic insignificance, and the amoebic fluidity of identity. These thematic depths are mirrored in their voidic compositions, which oscillate between immersive minimalism and explosively chaotic peaks.
Opening the night, Insect Ark crafts deeply immersive soundscapes using bass, lap steel guitar, and haunting vocals—now featured prominently for the first time since their debut. Founded by multi-instrumentalist and composer Dana Schechter (Swans, Angels of Light), the band has recently recruited legendary drummer Tim Wyskida, known for his work in Khanate and Blind Idiot God. Their fourth album »Raw Blood Singing« is a writhingly« beautiful evolution: swirling lashes of doomgaze, experimental textures, and an absolutely meticulous approach to dynamics and emotion.

Centered around Dana Schechter (SWANS), since forming in 2011 INSECT ARK has crafted a captivating catalogue of experimental Art. In collaboration for the first time with Tim Wyskida (KHANATE) and now incorporating Schechter's ethereal vocals into their music, the band proudly presents fourth full-length, "Raw Blood Singing". Showing clear evolution, INSECT ARK creates a lush, bleak, and expansive soundscape - transitioning from gentle whispers of synth to a monstrous wall of sound, driven by Schechter's fiery lap steel playing, sinister bass work, and the immense, scorching power of Wyskida's drums.

Insect Ark, featuring Dana Schechter (Swans) and Tim Wyskida (Khanate, Blind Idiot God, etc.), release their new album "Raw Blood Singing" on June 7th via Debemur-Morti Records. At the outer realms of avant-Metal, psych-Doom and experimental Goth, Insect Ark fiercely refuses the trappings of simple genre categorization. Schechter and Wyskida, who deconstructed and re-imagined Insect Ark in the lead-up to the new album, release a preview of "Raw Blood Singing" with the arrival of "Youth Body Swayed." A notable shift for the band is the decision to add Schechter's vocals, with previous Insect Ark releases having been instrumental.

I'm performing a special set with Ocrilim, the project of guitarist Mick Barr (Krallice, Orthrelm) at CTM Festival in Berlin on January 30th, 2024. Info and link to tickets below.
Ocrilim is the solo moniker of New York based guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Mick Barr, best known for his work with black/post metal bands Krallice and Orthrelm. Active since the mid-90s the prolific output of this non-compromising artist doesn’t fit into easy categories as it straddles the worlds of extreme metal and avantgarde music. Titled by some as the John Fahey of metal, Barr’s speed and agility on the guitar are legendary, displaying a stunning technique that plunges through deep compositions. Performing both a solo set and as a duo with Tim Wyskida of Khanate and Blind Idiot God on drums, Ocrilim will engulf listeners with continuous streams of repetitive distorted phrases and riffs that, despite their rigorous minimalism, coalesce into whirring pieces of jarring complexity.

"My guest today is Tim Wyskida, the drummer for Khanate. We talked climbing, minimalist playing, the role of space in music, reinventing oneself, the past, present and future of Khanate and the other bands he plays in, his long-standing friendship, Alan Dubin's lyrics, how close he came to becoming Elvin Jones' tech, and advice from his drumming teacher that he's remembered for years and the age of other issues."

Roadburn will host the long awaited live return of Khanate at the 2024 edition of the festival.
In the years since Khanate were last active there have been many heavy bands that followed in their footsteps. Some are able to emulate the abject bleakness, some capture the low-end rumble, a lot of them are undoubtedly extremely heavy. But none quite capture the grotesque combination of all three components quite like Khanate. We urge all worshippers of the low and the slow to brace for impact come April. This is going to be one for the history books.
"As a collective, Khanate has been silent during our dormancy, but now we will get loud; very loud. We’ll be returning to the stage, to explore tension and the elasticity of time - at Roadburn 2024. Get dead.” - Khanate
Roadburn 2024 will take place between April 18-21 in Tilburg, The Netherlands. 4-day tickets for Roadburn 2024 are now on sale. Other ticket options - including single day tickets and accommodation - will follow on November 3. www.roadburn.com for more information.

Veil of Sound interview. "Khanate and their new record were one of the biggest surprises in 2023, simply dropping their fifth full-length without any official hints, promotion or anything on May 19. Everyone’s feed was dominated by the news and everyone automatically went ahead to listen to it. The record has now had time to settle in and people were able to dive into To Be Cruel and as we are sure that there are still things that need clarification and explanation! Hence we were happy to get together with drummer Tim Wyskida to talk about the record and loads of things related to it!"

Tim Wyskida (US - drums)
Poster by @aslowsecret
Canadian (but Berlin-based) guitarist Baker began the Trio Not Trio project in 2022 as a series of improvisational recording sessions wherein Baker played in person as a duo with another Berlin-based musician, then sent those recordings to an international musician to add a third part to complete the trio.
Baker chose this particular work method in a deliberate attempt to explore the different experiences and methodologies of in-person performance compared to long-distance, file-sharing collaborations. The resulting recordings from these five trios, eleven different musicians, none of whom had previously worked together, resulted in quite different albums. Each with unique sounds and characteristics, combining elements of jazz, ambient, electronic, rock, and avant-garde music, even as Baker's signature guitar sound binds them together.
PRESSING NOTES:
Each of the 5 CD's come in deluxe, hand-silkscreened, gatefold, recycled card sleeves with an insert and bandcamp download code included. Each one is hand-numbered, and limited to 185 copies.
The box set is limited to 35 copies and each one is individually hand-painted, using mixed media methods by Aidan Baker. Limited to one per person. See the Gizeh website for full details on the subscription and shipping.

A bootleg recording of a show I played with the boys from Choke City is now available on Bandcamp.
Choke City is an American rock ‘n roll band consisting of Matt Gordon (Kaiju Daisenso) - Vocals, Mike Ciasullo (52X) - Bass, Lou Koster (Bona Roba) - Guitars, formed in 2020. High energy numbers reminiscent of the early sounds of the Stooges, NY Dolls and The Heartbreakers, Choke City’s punk ‘n roll sound goes perfectly turned up with a beer.
Notes from the band regarding the show/recording:
The sun setting, I got off the train at Astor place. My head rung like a bell from the night before. I’d heard about a gig tonight at Captain Sam’s Seafood on 2nd ave. They said Choke City were not to be missed and that the rainbow trout was the best in the city. The street smelled like piss and garbage, a smell only the high heat of a NYC summer could produce. The cracks in the street reminded me of small aqueducts leading the effluent of centuries to a fetid estuary somewhere. People moved through the din on varied transports like so many carousel horse rides. I arrived. The crowd queued outside the door pulsing like trash coming in and out from the sea. The venue already pregnant with attendance. I heard the cacophonous noise of Choke City’s soundtrack while waiting to enter. I recorded what I could. My phone shaking in my palm with every note. A resounding thunder. A pleading bleat. Welcome to Choke City.

Insect Ark will be touring Europe in June 2022 and I’m chuffed to be playing drums for the performances. Czech Republic and Slovakia shows are confirmed with additional dates to be announced soon. Come out. Let’s feel bad, together.
INSECT ARK, the long-running exploratory endeavor led by Dana Schechter, is excited to announce that Tim Wyskida (Khanate, Blind Idiot God, Azonic), will be collaborating with Dana on the next Insect Ark album and playing drums for upcoming live performances. The band is now officially based in Berlin. As per Dana, “This complex & vibrant city is now our official HQ, making it easier to focus on work in Europe".
